If you’ve started planning your honeymoon, you’ve probably opened far too many browser tabs.
Italy. Greece. Bora Bora. St. Lucia. The Maldives. Costa Rica.
Every destination looks incredible, and suddenly the decision feels harder instead of easier. After planning hundreds of honeymoons, I’ve noticed something interesting. Most couples start with the wrong question. Instead of asking, “Where should we go?” start by asking, “How do we want this trip to feel?”
That one shift makes choosing the right honeymoon destination much easier.
Why Most Couples Choose a Honeymoon Destination Backwards
Social media has made it easier than ever to fall in love with beautiful destinations, but a destination that looks amazing online isn’t automatically the right fit for your honeymoon.
One couple dreams of wandering charming villages and lingering over long dinners. Another wants adventure, hiking, and snorkeling. Someone else wants to unpack once, spend every afternoon by the pool, and completely disconnect.
None of those are wrong. They’re simply different experiences, which means they’ll lead to different destinations.
Start With the Experience You Want
Before you compare resorts or countries, answer these questions together: Do we want to relax or explore? Would we rather stay in one place or experience two destinations? What do we want to remember most about this trip? How important are food, culture, beaches, or adventure? Do we enjoy a busy itinerary or a slower pace?
These answers will narrow your options much faster than scrolling through Instagram ever will.
Match the Destination to Your Priorities
Once you know the type of honeymoon you want, the destination becomes much easier to choose.
Love incredible food, culture, and walkable towns? Italy or Portugal may be perfect.
Looking for complete relaxation? Bora Bora or the Maldives could be a better fit.
Want a mix of adventure and beach time? Consider Costa Rica or St. Lucia.
Dreaming of history, island hopping, and beautiful scenery? Greece might be exactly what you’re looking for.
The destination should support the experience—not define it.
The Biggest Honeymoon Planning Mistake I See
The biggest mistake isn’t choosing the wrong destination. It’s choosing the destination before you’ve decided what kind of honeymoon you actually want. When couples start with the experience instead of the map, they spend far less time second-guessing themselves and far more time getting excited about the trip they’re creating together.
The destination isn’t the decision. The experience is.

There isn’t one “best” destination. The right honeymoon depends on your travel style, budget, priorities, and the kind of experience you want to have together.
I generally recommend planning 8–12 months in advance, especially if you’re traveling during peak seasons or considering destinations with limited availability.
It depends on your travel style and the length of your trip. Split stays work beautifully for many couples traveling 8–10 nights or longer, while shorter trips often benefit from staying in one location.
Start by deciding how you want your honeymoon to feel before comparing destinations. Your priorities, whether that’s relaxation, adventure, food, culture, or beaches, will naturally narrow the list.
A travel advisor helps you match destinations and resorts to your priorities, navigate logistics, avoid common planning mistakes, and create an itinerary designed specifically for you.
Key Takeaways
- Start with the experience you want—not the destination.
- Prioritize how you want your honeymoon to feel.
- Let your travel style narrow your destination options.
- The best honeymoon is the one that’s right for you—not the one trending on social media.
