(Most Couples Skip #3 — and Regret It)
If you’re newly engaged and Googling “best honeymoon destinations,” you’ve probably already noticed a problem:
Everything looks amazing.
Everyone says something different.
And suddenly, planning your honeymoon feels way more stressful than romantic.
Here’s the truth most couples don’t realize until it’s too late:
The “best” honeymoon destination doesn’t exist.
The best honeymoon for you does.
Before you book flights, price resorts, or fall down an Instagram rabbit hole, you need to answer these five questions. Skip them—and you’ll likely end up with a trip that looks great online but feels wrong in real life.
1. Do You Want to Collapse… or Explore?
Be honest. This isn’t about who you think you should be. Some couples want:
- Beach days
- Room service
- Zero decisions
- Maximum decompression after wedding chaos
Others want:
- Food tours
- Culture
- Cities + scenery
- “We’ll sleep when we’re home” energy
Most couples want both—but in the wrong order.
👉 Mistake I see constantly:
Couples book a fast-paced itinerary immediately after their wedding… and spend the first 4 days exhausted.
Pro tip: If you want adventure and rest, start slow and layer in experiences later.
2. Are You Chasing a Vibe—or a Checklist?
This is where FOMO ruins honeymoons. Ask yourself:
- Are you choosing a destination because it fits your style?
- Or because you feel like you’re “supposed to” go there?
A few examples:
- Europe honeymoons are incredible… if you love movement and stimulation
- Overwater bungalows are dreamy… if you’re okay being intentionally bored
- All-inclusive resorts are perfect… if you value ease over exploration
There is no wrong answer. There is a wrong match.
3. How Much Decision-Making Do You Want to Do on the Trip?
This is the question almost no one asks—and it matters more than budget.
On your honeymoon, do you want to:
- Wake up and decide everything on the fly?
- Or have most details handled so you can just enjoy?
Here’s the reality:
- Some destinations require planning to be magical
- Others are designed so you don’t have to think at all
Neither is better.
But choosing the wrong one for your personality leads to stress, wasted time, and “why didn’t we think about this?” moments.
4. What Does “Luxury” Mean to You?
Luxury is personal—and couples get this wrong constantly.
For some, luxury means:
- Space
- Privacy
- Quiet
- Seamless service
For others, it’s:
- Location
- Food
- Design
- Unique experiences
The problem?
Many couples pay for things they don’t actually value—and skip the things they do.
👉 This is where strategy beats price shopping every time.
5. How Much Help Do You Actually Want?
You don’t get bonus points for doing this alone.
Planning a honeymoon isn’t hard because couples are incapable—it’s hard because:
- You’re short on time
- You’ve never done this before
- The stakes feel high
- And the internet is full of conflicting advice
Some couples want:
- A DIY framework + expert guardrails
Others want: - “Please just handle this so we don’t screw it up”
Knowing which one you are will instantly narrow your best-fit destinations.
If you’re early in the process and worried about making the wrong call, I break down the most common honeymoon planning mistakes couples make — and how to avoid them — here.
The Couples Who Love Their Honeymoons Do This One Thing Differently
They stop asking: “Where should we go?”
And start asking: “What kind of honeymoon do we actually want?”
Once that’s clear, the destination becomes obvious—and the planning gets exponentially easier.
