Is Butler Service Worth it?
You’re comparing rooms at an all-inclusive resort and there it is: Butler Level.
The room looks better. There may be some additional perks. And having a personal butler on vacation certainly sounds luxurious. But is butler service actually worth paying more for?
Sometimes, absolutely. Other times, I’d tell you to save your money. After staying in plenty of butler-level rooms myself and booking them for clients, I don’t think everyone needs a butler to have a great vacation. The value depends much more on how you like to vacation than whether you simply want the “best” room category.
Here’s how I decide when Butler Level is worth the upgrade.
First: What Does a Resort Butler Actually Do?
This varies by resort, butler program and destination, but a resort butler is essentially there to personalize your stay and handle things that you would otherwise take care of yourself.
Depending on the resort, that can include:
- Making or changing dining reservations
- Reserving preferred beach or pool seating
- Arranging activities, spa appointments and special requests
- Bringing drinks or meals to your room or another area of the resort
- Keeping your room stocked with your preferred beverages
- Coordinating celebrations and surprises
- Helping with requests or problems during your stay
- Handling some of the little logistics that come up throughout a vacation
At some resorts, Butler Level also comes with upgraded room locations, additional amenities, private check-in or other benefits that aren’t included with lower room categories. That’s an important distinction: Sometimes you’re upgrading for the butler. Sometimes you’re upgrading because the room you want happens to come with one.
Butler Service Is Worth It If You Like Things Taken Care of for You
This is probably the biggest one. Some travelers love arriving at a resort and figuring things out as they go. They’ll make their own dinner reservations, grab whatever chairs are available and happily walk over to the bar when they want another drink. Others want vacation to require little effort.
If your idea of luxury is having someone else handle the little details while you enjoy your vacation, Butler Level can be very worth it. Instead of thinking, I need to remember to make that reservation, you send a message. Instead of stopping what you’re doing to solve a problem, you have someone to contact. The individual tasks may sound small, but having someone consistently handling them for you can change how the entire vacation feels.
It Can Be Especially Valuable at a Large or Busy Resort
This is where butler service can go from a nice extra to something I genuinely value. At a large resort, there may be multiple restaurants, pools, beaches, activities and entertainment options to navigate. During busy travel periods, the most popular reservations or locations can also be harder to get. A good butler already knows how the resort operates. This doesn’t mean they can magically make anything happen, and no butler can guarantee every request. But having someone who knows the property and can help you navigate it can make a big resort feel considerably easier.
If You Have Strong Preferences, You’ll Probably Appreciate It More
Do you care where you sit at the pool? Have a favorite drink you want stocked in your room? Want dinner at a certain restaurant at a certain time? Celebrating something and want a few special touches? The more preferences you have, the more opportunities there are for a good butler to add value. If you’re genuinely happy with whatever happens, you may not use the service nearly as much.
Sometimes the Room Is the Real Reason to Upgrade
This gets overlooked when people compare Butler Level versus Club Level or standard rooms. At many resorts, some of the most desirable suites are only available with butler service. That could mean a private pool, better view, beachfront location, larger balcony, separate living area or simply a much better room. In that situation, I don’t evaluate the price difference based on butler service alone.
The better question is: Would I pay this amount for the room upgrade and everything that comes with it?
Sometimes the answer is an easy yes.
When I DON’T Think Butler Service Is Worth It
Here’s where knowing your travel style matters. If you’re the type of traveler who leaves your room after breakfast and spends the entire day exploring, diving, golfing or going on excursions, you may barely interact with your butler.
If you don’t care where you sit at the pool, don’t need specific dinner reservations and are perfectly happy grabbing your own drinks, you may not get much value from the service either. And some people simply don’t like being waited on. They feel awkward asking someone to bring them something they could easily get themselves. If that’s you, having a butler may actually make your vacation feel less relaxing rather than more luxurious. There’s nothing wrong with that.
Luxury is only valuable when it improves your experience.
One Thing People Forget: Butler Service Usually Means Tipping
At resorts where gratuities for butlers aren’t included, you should factor tipping into the actual cost of choosing Butler Level. How much you tip will depend on the resort, destination, level of service and how much you use your butler. But it shouldn’t be an afterthought when you’re deciding whether the upgrade fits your vacation budget. I would rather have someone choose a room category they comfortably love than stretch the budget for Butler Level and spend the trip worrying about every additional expense.
So, Is Butler Level Worth It?
For the right traveler, yes. I tend to recommend it more when:
- You’re planning a honeymoon, anniversary or milestone trip
- You’ll spend a lot of time enjoying the resort
- You appreciate personalized service
- You have specific preferences
- You’re staying at a large resort where having a go-to person is valuable
- The room or suite you really want is in the Butler Level category
I’m less likely to recommend it when you’ll barely be at the resort, don’t desire added service or would have to sacrifice something you value more just to afford the upgrade. I don’t believe in upgrading simply because something has a more luxurious label.
The best upgrade is the one you’ll actually notice. Sometimes that’s Butler Level. Sometimes it’s the better view, the nonstop flight, the private transfer or another night on vacation. The answer depends on you.
